New Tax Benefit for Auto Loan Interest: Could You Deduct Up to $10,000?
Buying a new vehicle can be expensive, especially when interest charges are added to your monthly payments. A new federal tax deduction may provide some relief for eligible taxpayers.
For tax years 2025 through 2028, qualifying taxpayers may be able to deduct up to $10,000 per year in qualified passenger vehicle loan interest. The deduction is available to eligible taxpayers whether they itemize deductions or take the standard deduction.
If you are preparing your 2025 tax return, this is one tax benefit worth checking before you file.
Who Can Qualify for the Auto Loan Interest Deduction?
The deduction applies to interest paid on a qualifying loan used to purchase a new vehicle for personal use. To qualify, several requirements must be met.
1. The maximum deduction is $10,000
Eligible taxpayers may deduct up to $10,000 of qualified vehicle loan interest each year.
However, the deduction is subject to income limits. The benefit begins to phase out when modified adjusted gross income exceeds $100,000 for most taxpayers and $200,000 for married couples filing jointly.
2. The loan must have originated after December 31, 2024
The loan must be taken out after December 31, 2024, and the deduction is available for qualifying interest paid or accrued during tax years 2025 through 2028.
3. The vehicle must be new and for personal use
Used vehicles do not qualify. The original use of the vehicle must begin with the taxpayer.
The vehicle must also be for personal use. Vehicles used for business or commercial purposes generally do not qualify for this deduction.
4. The loan must be secured by the vehicle
The interest must be paid on a qualifying loan used to purchase the vehicle, and the loan must be secured by a lien on that vehicle. Lease payments do not qualify.
5. The vehicle must have final assembly in the United States
A qualifying vehicle can include a car, minivan, van, SUV, pickup truck, or motorcycle with a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 14,000 pounds. The vehicle must have undergone final assembly in the United States.
Do not rely only on the first digit of the VIN. The IRS recommends checking the vehicle information label, VIN information, or the NHTSA VIN Decoder to verify where final assembly occurred.
What Documents Should You Keep?
If you believe you qualify for this deduction, keep records related to your vehicle purchase and loan.
You may need:
- A lender statement showing the qualified vehicle loan interest paid
- Your vehicle identification number, or VIN
- Vehicle purchase documents
- Loan documents
- Documentation showing the vehicle meets the qualification requirements
The VIN must be included on the tax return for each year you claim the deduction. For the 2025 tax year, the deduction is reported on Schedule 1-A.
